I am thinking of using DNN to host sites for others. I haven't looked at the shopping cart and discussion forum which come with DNN. I know there are a few third party modules which offer more features.

My question is I wanted to know if these two modules suffer from major limitations. For example if the cart doesn't support any payment gateway, that's a serious limitation. For my situation, if the cart doesn't support shared certs, it's a limitation.

I also want to hear why people went ahead and purchased a third party forum or cart. Thanks

Depending on what you need for a shopping cart, I would start with Catalook or the Core DNN store module. Catalook is quite hefty, and can do a lot, though might be intimidating to configure the first time.

As for a forum module, I would go with ActiveForums from www.activemodules.com, while the core DNN forum module has a lot of functionality right now it has some bugs that AF doesn't have from my experiences.

I looked at Catalook a while back and I concluded it would be too complicated for the average user who wants to put up a quick store.

Does the core store support payment gateways like Authorizet? Where are the features of the store listed on this site? Actually where are the features listed for every module? This basic important information is hard to locate!

The last release for the store is 10/16/2007. It doesn't look like it gets updated frequently.

I'm pretty sure that the core store supports PayPal and Authorize.net, but you can of course build additional providers.

Besides paymeny gateway options, another deciding factor on alternative stores is whether you need real time shipping calculated. Many stores don't offer this out of the box, and if you don't want to code your own then it limits your choices also.

If you don't need RT Shipping, there are quite a few good options available.

Having used the 2 stores you mention - Catalook and DNN Store - the DNN Store is the far and above winner when you start talking about putting it in the hands of "average users" with a "quick store." Don't even think about giving them Catalook or you'll lose your sanity when trying to support them all.

I lost my sanity when I first looked at Catalook for myself :) The thing had a ton of modules and I figured I will have a heavy burden if I am going to support it for others. Thanks for the info.
