Hello all,

I've just recently had the need to let my portal send out automatically generated passwords. I'm finding the generated passwords to be way too loony for my users. A typical password will be something like this: ;=H_;FUk9=

What I want to know is whether there is a way to improve this behaviour this by making it use only letters and numbers. I realise of course that the sample password above is potentially more secure, but that is not relevant to me here.

Any advice is much appreciated

Rob

Bumpitybump

Anyone?

I'm wondering if there are perhaps additional attributes for the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider section in web config.. that seems a likely place?

Hi Rob,

This is done in the Membership provider in code. You won't have any luck in the web.config IMO.

If the DNN developers are using the Membership class to generate the passwords and not another random generator, it is, in fact, in the Membership code and cannot be configured with in ASP.Net membership provider configuration settings.  The method does, however, take 2 parameters: length and number of symbol (non-alphanumeric) characters.  The team could out those parameters in the web.config in the app settings or a custom section.

On a tangent point and probably the wrong forum, it would also be very cool for the DNN team to include the Password Strength Extender from the Ajax Toolkit... ;)
