I have a domain name, which we'll say is mydnn.mydomain.com and when users enter "mydnn.mydomain.com" in their browser, I want them to be taken to the DNN portal installed at C:\inetpub\wwwroot\mydnn. What are the steps to set up IIS to make this happen?  NOTE that I DO NOT want them to have to specify "mydnn.mydomain.com\mydnn" to get to the site.

If its possible to have IIS respond the same to two different domain names, can someone please explain how to set it up to do that as well?

Thanks

couple of simple steps:

  • make sure you have a website that points to C:\inetpub\wwwroot\mydnn, and not a virtual directory under default website named /mydnn that points to that same folder
  • make sure mydnn.mydomain.com is entered in the host header of the website
  • make sure your dns settings point to the correct ip address

oh.. and if you want a website to respond to multiple domain names, just enter them all in the host header. An alternative would be to enter nothing in the host header of the site (just the ip address and the port to respond to), and make sure all domains point to the same ip address. IIS will handle all those domains with that website then.

for more questions on IIS, you could vist http://www.iisfaq.com/ or the IIS 6.0 documentation or the IIS 7.0 documentation
