Not sure how to take advantage of this feature.  On DotNetPanel do i need to add name to Domain, Website, and Database?   I know i am missing something here.   I have room for 25 domains, 5 websites and only 3 databases.  This means i can only bring up 3 websites.   Am i missing something here????   Thanx for any help.  I really feel stupid here.

That means 25 domains spread across 5 IIS websites. The databases means you can have three distinct DNN applications. however, each of those can have any number of portals. For a portal to have its own domain, it needs to be able to be an IIS website.

You should aim for one DNN applicaiton with up to 5 websites on it, or 2 DNN apps with the 5 spread across them (but that also requires double resources and may not be worth it). Save the remaining db for testing upgrades and modules.

The remaining 20 domains can be directed to any of the 5 websites. Each time you want to add another distinct domain (IIS website), you will probably need to pay an extra fee.

It's all very confusing, and I could be wrong about any specific detail because I'm just talking about the norm.

Different DNN websites (portals) can be hosted on the same database through using table name prefix. this means you can get 5 DNN websites by just use 1 of 3 database.

Just for your information, that solution is not recommended for compatibility reason.

tHANK YOU, I NOW  HAVE TWO PARENT PORTALS INSTALLED.  HAVE BOTH DOMAIN & WEBNAMES ENTERED ON CONTROL PANEL.  USED DOTNETNUKE TEMPLATE AND GET THE "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" MESSAGE ON BOTH PORTALS.  PORTAL 0 IS OK. THERE ARE FOLDERS 1 & 2 UNDER PORTALS.  GOT ANY IDEAS.  DOTNETPARK PANEL SEEM SIMPLE ENOUGH.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Hate this 'feeling lost' crap.

I think you're mixing different systems here... and yes, it is definitely confusing at the start.

  • First, get one DNN installation working with one database and one domain. That's all you need to begin with.
  • Then, use the Host Menu, Portals page to add a new child portal.
  • Now you will have two websites, one at "domain.com" and one at "domain.com/childname".
  • You should not be seeing any construction messages at any time here.

You can keep adding more child portals, as many as you like. Do this so that you see and understand how to add portals.

If you then want to turn a child portal such as "domain.com/childname" into a website such as "domain2.com" then do this:

  1. Add the new domain as a new website in your hosting panel
  2. Point the new domain to your DNN installation folder
  3. Go to Admin, Site Settings in the child portal, scroll down to the bottom...
  4. And add the new domain name as an additional "Portal Alias"
  5. If the new domain is http://www.domain.com then add the alias as simply www.domain.com, without the http://

The fact that you are seeing construction messages leads me to believe you might be trying to repeatedly install DNN, possibly even over itself. You only need to install it once, and with just one db.
