Everytime I try to clean up my folders by deleting unused files, I get the first file deleted successfully but the following attempts result in the following error;

"Error Deleting File: [file path]  The process cannot access the file  [file path] because it is being used by another process."

What is this other process? The files I am deleting are not being used. Eventually if I am patient enough I will get all of them. But is there anything I can do to eliminate the wait? Usually about 20 minutes later I can delete one more. Is this some sort of caching thing?

Thanks

I have not seen this before, however maybe some additional info will assist.  What version of DNN are you running?  What platform is it on (version of Windows, IIS, etc)?  What are the file permissions on the Portals folder?  Do you have AV or a realtime backup system running on the server (like Carbonite)?

Yep, this happens all the time

It's definitely a problem. For now people just have to return a little later and try again.

Answers:

  • DNN 4.08.01
  • Hosted at AQuest so I don't have the OS and IIS versions
  • Admin has Edit All Users have View on the Portal folder
  • No realtime backup or AV

More symptoms:

  • When I expand the Portal folder, the image changes from + to - but the folder does not open
  • If I click again to close it and again to open it, it does open and lists the subfolders
  • I can repeat this to open folders all day
  • But when I select one, I get "A critical error has occurred. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Steve in your case I would recommend upgrading DotNetNuke anyway when 4.9.2/5.0.1 comes out.

Anyway check out this issue in regards to deletion, and esp the long list of comments below it:

http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?id=8314&PROJID=2

This particular issue seems to be a a big mystery that is proving very difficult/almost impossible for the team to solve. If anyone can come up with a coded solution for the DNN 5.0.0/5.0.1 perspective that would be seriously good contribution. The finger wigling seems more towards an ASP.NET bug, but this is yet to be proven in my view.

Thanks...

Alex Shirley
