Hi,

I would be thankful if someone could explain to me why version 4.8.4 has been removed from Downloads. I do not understand the strategy behind it.

4.8.4 is definitely the most stable version of DNN and 4.9.0 cannot be an immediate substitute for that because it has new enhancements and would probably have some deficiencies that would be resolved by upcoming releases (4.9.1, 4.9.2, etc). Correct me please if I am wrong.

Cheers,

Mehrbod

Any legacy version can be downloaded from Sourceforge, using the "legacy downloads" link on the main download page. However, DNN 4.9.0 is much more stable, besides updated components (new skin, container, search and text skin objects, fckeditor provider and several modules) only bug fixes are included.

I have not found any isues wih 4.9.0 that should prevent you from moving from 4.8.x to 4.9.0

4.9.0 does have about three security patches and the skin changes require a new skin design if your wish to use the new features, otherwise your current skins should be just fine.

We have for over twelve months now adopted a policy to test, then upgrade every release of DotNetNuke for our clients and certainly have not experienced any unstable versions during that time.

Having followed a number of hints on this site, I would suggest that there may not be any further 4.9.x releases before version 5, therefore it is probably a good idea to at least test 4.9.0 againts a copy of your earlier version in readiness for version 5

Given that DNN 4.9.0 contains 2 Critical Security fixes, you should not treat this as a standard release.  In addition to these two fixes, there are fixes to serious caching bugs which can cause instability in highly trafficked sites or sites which push the limits of the allocated memory.  After more than a week in release, there are no significant new issues reported for 4.9.0.  Usually when we have an unstable release, the problems are discovered fairly quickly.

Hi,

Thanks to everybody who replied to this thread. It was quite helpful.

Actually, although you all now say the recent release (4.9.0) is stable, I do not think anyone would say so in the early days of its release although it contains many bug fixes. Having enhancements and new features is always of concern and hinders people from immediate upgrading to.

I wish we could have 4.8.5 first before any 4.9 release. By means of some source controls like TFS, devs can manage applying bug fixes with little efforts across multiple releases being developed in parallel. Is such a thing being used by DNN devs?
