When you made the change, setting customErrors mode to "Off" in web.config, did you get any more information about the error? This change won't fix the problem, but it should allow your site to tell you what went wrong. Without some sort of error message, there is no way of knowing what is broken.

You could also try looking in \Portals\_default\Logs for the file "LogFailures.xml.resources", which may contain some error details if your installation got far enough.

If you can get an error message, we should be able to work out what is wrong.

Sorry eventually got round to having a look at this - there is nothing in the Logs directory, apart from a LogConfig directory, and again not xml files in their either.
