can you check the server eventlog if the app pool was forced to shut down? I noticed this behaviour on a client portal and was able to identify a module causing the application to fail several time to communicate with Publishing service until the app pool was halted. Same module works fine on several other sites though.

This is an issue with your SSL settings. If this is a single portal installation you'll need to make the changes in the database. If it is a multi-portal install and you can access the Host>Portals menu you can edit the portal settings from there.

In the Site Settings>Advanced Settings>SSL Settings remove the checkmark from the SSL Enabled and SSL Enforced check boxes.

I would help you with the DB info but for the life of me I can't find where the site settings are stored. The Tabs table has an IsSecure field but these are set to True for hthe sites that work. There must be a DB field someplace that you can change the SSL Enabled and SSL Enforced from true to false for a specific portal.

Anyone tell us where that is at?

To expand a bit on Jack's answer ...

If the problem is that you can't see Admin and Host pages, then it's the SSL issue.   You can't see these pages in Portal 0, but you can see them in other portals if you have a multi-portal installation.

For the multi-portal installation, just login to one of them, visit the Host Settings page and uncheck the boxes that relate to SSL.  If you require SSL, I'm not quite sure what do do about that.

If you have a single portal installation, the solution is to look at the Tabs table and set IsSecure to false for every page!
