I have upgraded from DNN 04.08.04 to DNN 04.09.00, I foget rename the release.config file to web.config, so that it using the old web.config file, but it still install success. How ever when I access the Portal, I see error: Runtime Error, and the web Provider send me the following:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Did you create a database backup before upgrading?

If so, here is what I would do:

  1. Stop the site in IIS
  2. Make another backup if the current database
    (make sure it has a unique name so you do not over write the other backup)
  3. Restore the database backup from pre-upgrade
  4. Re-copy the DNN 4.9.0 upgrade package over your site (just like you did last time)
  5. Use a compare tool (or by hand) move your SQL Connection Info, Install Date, machineKey, codeSubDirectories, and anything you have manually updated in the web.config to the release.config (over writing the data in the release.config)
  6. Rename web.config to web.config.old
  7. Rename release.config to web.config
  8. Start the site again in IIS
  9. Browse the site to kick off the install

That should get you back on track.
