I have been trying for 2 days to get DotNetNuke installed on my new notebook. I don't know if it's security related or what. I am no expert on DNN and neither of IIS and am having problems setting the said permissions as I have no idea where to do it. It says in the install guide that I should give permission to ASPNET and NETWORK SERVICE and I can't figure out where. I don't even have a NETWORK SERVICE account. I am running Windows XP. I type the following into my address bar in IE7:

http://localhost/DotNetNuke/Install/Install.aspx?mode%20=Install

And get this error:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Could not find a part of the path 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\Config\Backup_20089261126\web_.config'.Access to the path 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\web.config' is denied.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Disable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

  • If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
    1. the [SERVER]\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.
  • If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
    1. the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

You should give full permission to your windows [ComputerName]\ASPNET and NETWORK SERVICE account on DotNetNuke website folder.

Goto the folder root of the DNN installation in explorer itself (not IIS).
Right click/Properties on the folder itself.
Goto the security tab
Add "Network service" and "ASPNET" one by one.
Once you see your users in the security tab make sure these users have full "allow" permissions for everything (if you don't, and can't change this you need to goto advanced/ and untick "Inherit from parent"... click OK).
Click "Advanced"
Click "Replace permission entries on all child objects......
Click OK twice
Job done.

I did everything you said Alex. It still foes not work. I looked at web.config and found this expression in two places. My server is "localhost" not "local". Does anyone know if I need to make changes from "local" to ";ocalhost"?

connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;"
