I'm considering using DNN for a new project and I've been researching this all week.  It all looks nice for regular content management but I am at a loss of how/where you integrate dynamic data from a database.  Are there any tutorials on this?  I can't find anything in DNN that would suggest you can have dynamic data.  So far, I seem a bit limited by having all of this overhead.  If someone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome!

thx,
seed

seed.

Could you clarify what you mean by dynamic data, please? I think I know what you mean, but I'm hesitant to give you an elaborate answer based on my assumptions. Perhaps providing examples of what sort of abilities your web site should have would help as well.

Thanks & Take care,

Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for replying.  I'm used to designing database driven websites where the content (drop downs, news, events, articles, etc) are stored in SQL Server. Lately, I've been creating data handlers to handle the configuration of the datasets/tables, etc.  I'm just not clear on how you integrate all of this into DNN.

thanks again!

s,

OK - Gotcha :) You should take a look at this tutorial from Michael Washington on how to connect your module to the database: http://adefwebserver.com/dotnetnukehelp/DAL_and_DAL_Plus/Default.htm. I think you'll find that helpful.

In essence though, if you're used to using ASP.NET & SQL Server in a non-dotnetnuke environment, the basic tasks associated with storing data do not change too significantly, in fact, you can probably do it the same exact way you're used to -- however, there are a few 'best practices' or 'DNN standard' ways of doing things, and the article listed above will help to get you started with those.

Take care,

Ian
