I'm trying to install DNN on my windows server 2008 machine. I've downloaded version 4.09 and have sql server 2005 express installed on it. I've gotten to the Configure Database Connection on the install of DNN. When I test the database connection I get the following error.

Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 14
Number: 15372
Message: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.

This is caused by installation of SQL server, not allowing to use user instances. I suggest to manually create a DNN database, grant permission to local user "Network Service" (if you enabled integrated security or create a SQL server account, if you enabled SQL server authentication) and use SQL Server 2000/2005 connection string instead of Express in the DNN install wizard.

Absolutely... You will need to go about with the manual database creation and executing the scripts.
