I think there could be a bug here somewhere:

If I look at the Country List under Hosts -> Lists, the value for Iran is "Iran" and "IR".

If I do a view source on the Edit Profile page where the country list is shown it shows up as "Iran" and "Iran" (this is not the bug). This is the value that is stored in the UserProfile table when the profile is saved.

However, when a new user from Iran joined and did not edit their profile their UserProfile is saved as "Iran, Islamic Republic of" - I assume this is from the .NET framework, but it is stored as a different value. I would imagine if they edited their profile it would default to the base Country and they would select "Iran" and it would then save as "Iran". I am sure there are more examples of this.

I just had a look into the database, currently the countries and regions are stored by caption - not an ideal solution, I have to confess. As a quick solution, we might simply replace lists items and adjust user profile values, but in the long time we need to provide a true ML solution with localized names for Countries and Regions - unfortunately missing localization is one of the key features of Lists.
