Was yur Forum group created with the Forum Module 3.x and then upgrated to Forum 4.4.3 ? Or was it a new install?

It was the default install with core 04.09.00 (04.04.03)

I am not sure what you did to get those sort orders but they need to be set straight in order for you to get things functioning properly again. If all are in the same group, it should start with 0 and end with total count - 1.
