I'm new to building websites.  In fact, the one I'd like to build with DNN will be my first. I've watched a video about how to use DNN and I think it will do everything I want to do (and much more).  What I need to know is how do I start?  What software do I need to download to build a website that I can run on my laptop and then eventually upload to a hosting site.  I've read what the web host needs to have (ASP.NET, SQL Server) when I want to launch.  What I want to know is what I need to put on my machine to build this site.  I can't seem to find those step by step instructions on here yet.  Can someone help me or point me in the right direction?  Thanks a lot.

Download Visual Web Developer 2008, SQL Server Express and download the starter kit for DotNetNuke under the download icon.

DotNetNuke 4.9.0 Starter Kit Shaun Walker Starter Kit 9/10/2008 Unknown

Download

You now need to click on the starter kit file.

Next, Open Visual Web Developer and create a new website. Select the DotNetNuke  Web Application under My Templates.  Name your new Portal and click OK.

Once your files loads in Visual Web Developer then hold the CTRL F5 key. Your web browser will load up and then select Auto and click next. Scroll down and click on Click Here to Access your portal.

You can login as host or admin and use the default password.

Good luck.

Off to try it now I have the ASP.Net and Visual Web Developer with SQL Server Express loaded already.  I'll do the starter kit now and see what happens.  Thanks.  I'll report back.

Okay, so I'm up and running.  I've started with the default and removed all the DNN stuff and added my logo.  However, now I don't have any skins or containers (or like 3 maybe) and I only have a few modules.  I'm not sure I need a lot, but I thought it would come preloaded with skins and containers so I could try to match the look and feel to my logo color scheme.  How do I add skins, containers, and modules to my DDN?  Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

No, no, no and NO... the starter kit should not be recommended for new users.  And there is absolutely no need to start using Visual Web Developer.  It just overcomplicates the situation.

Instead a new user should download the install kit and follow one of the many install guides available.
