I've posted a blog about how the Google Guidelines regarding Paid Links have affected me as a "little guy" webmaster. This is nothing to do with DNN (although PokerDIY is built on DNN) but I'd rather discuss this here than on the Digital Point forums! (perhaps we need an SEO forum?)

You may find it interesting if you sell online advertising or maybe I have missed something and could help...

Interesting read Rodney. Am I understanding that you are saying that you were actually advertising the PR as part of the value in the Ad buys?

I don't see why it would be bad to just link to them as partners or affiliates.  I guess if the links were rotating in a banner ad they might be able to detect it, but I always thought someone would have to report you for selling PR before they would actually ding you for it.

I have affiliate/Partner links on my home page partially because I want people to visit them, mainly because I want the affiliate revenue (yes I admit it), but also because it helps boost PR to trade links.  I hope that isn't keeping me from raising higher than PR5.

Overall, I think it is best to stick with a CPC, or CPM model (or affiliate).

Originally yes (from 2-3 years ago) - I did advertise that the link-juice would be passed on. I have significantly updated my ad page blurb ;)

I really dont understand how they can tell the difference between a link I put up and a paid link. For example, I actually link to Google and Wikipedia lot - I added nofollows just in case their spiders do something with the total external link % but it seems ridiculous - if every link on the web had a nofollow then their algorithm would break.

I was just amazed by how quickly my PR was reinstated - of course, it could have been coincidence but I don't think so.

My gut feeling is that you may have only lost PR because of who you were linking to, maybe even a specific site.

Adding the nofollow would have removed those links from the calculation.

How many outbound links you have on any page is a part of the calculation of that page's PR.
