Hi all,

I've just discovered, to my horror, that the scheduler in my 4.90 installation has ceased all operations.

I've seen a handful of posts indicating a problem in upgraded 4.90 instances, and mine is upgraded from way back. can someone let me know if this is a known issue, and is there a workaround, and is it being fixed?

This is a bit of a killer for my sites.

I can force a task to run successfully on application start, so I know the tasks are there and working, but nothing seems to keep them running. I enabled debug for the scheduler and it did a whole lot of "EVENT ADDED TO PROCESS GROUP" events and then reported "Scheduler Stopped"

Thanks for any info on this

Rob

Hi Rob,

There's a thread in the sponsored forum which is dealing with this (it's looking better - Charles has fixed the caching issue which may affect the Scheduler). It looks like a 4.9.1 release will be issued but that is of course up to the core team.

Hurrah! Thanks for letting me know Rodney.

I was worried I'd have to upgrade to 5 to get it fixed and that's not going to be a minor task, nor is it going to be soon. What a nightmare.. I've got forum notifications, scheduled mailouts, and support ticket processing all sitting idle... bugger!

I hope 4.9.1 turns into a reality, that'll be a lifesaver. Where can we buy Charles a strong coffee.

Rob,

Out of curiousity, is your scheduler set to Request or Timer mode?  I have heard of few people locking up their sites when they switch scheduler, but I think that could be due to all the overdue tasks.  Timer mode seems to work well for us.  If you are running request mode then you can try the following:

1) Go to the sql menu and run "truncate table {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}schedulehistory"

2) Go to host settings and change the scheduler mode to timer.

3) Click Update, then Restart Application.

If you are already in timer mode, then still truncate the schedulehistory table then restart the application.  This will usually get the scheduler running properly again.

Hi Will, thanks for having a look in here.

My portal is in request mode as it's one of the handful around that locks up if switched to timer mode. When I do switch to timer mode, it stops halfway through the next application start and stays there until I switch it back again in the database. If you have any suggestions about resolving that I'm very much all ears.

I have always thought that something in the very long event queue in my db is the likely culprit for that, but I can't tell... only that the queue references all sorts of stuff like endelessly repeated module upgrades and suchlike - things that I wouldn't have thought need to run every time the system restarts. Maybe someone here knows more about that?

However, that may or may not be related to the scheduler issue, which I'm pretty sure is a new problem on my system since updating to 4.90.

I've truncated the schedule history table a few times via Host, SQL since yesterday, but it hasn't helped :(

This is running on my own fancy brand new server, sitting at server Intellect. It's running SQL Server 2008 Web edition which has the profiler tool, so if that is of any use in assessing this, then maybe I can get someone to have a look in?

I have a fresh DNN 4.90 test portal on the server as well. That works fine in timer mode and also runs the scheduler. I'd need to know where to start looking to track down the difference between the portals in this regard, so I'm very happy to receive any further advice.

I've read Charles' reply in the Gemini ticket and it looks like the issue is on the backburner until he can reproduce it in person. But surely he would be able to look at a server like mine remotely and be able to assess what's happening? Charles? If it would help, I'll give you access?

Regards,
Rob
