I am creating a new site and would like to have a virtual area where once logged in people can go using an avatar and connect with one another and chat, if that is not possible with a virtual world type, than something on the lines of facebook or myspace, where users have there page and can chat with one another. is there any kind of module or application that I can download to achieve this?

Check out Smart-Thinker and see what they have to offer.  They have advanced Walls, Messaging, Profiles, and more.  I have used their service, and it works pretty good.

Something like a combinatino of Active Forums and Smart Thinker messaging may work. That is the combo I am using on a news site with a very active membership.
