I am putting out a new call for developers for the News project.  Anyone interested in helping out should email me at jmcwilliam@gmail.com.  Any information you could provide about yourself would be very helpful.  Specifically, noting things like your experience, how much time you can contribute to the project, and what you would like to do to help would be useful.  I am attempting to structure the project into several small peices that can be developed seperately.   As a result of this, I hope to allow people to help without having to commit to a large amount of time.   Developers are not the only people we need.  Anyone interested in helping with any of the following should please contact me:

  • Research - people to figure out comparative / competitive products  and document their functionality to help figure out what functionality to implement next.
  • Analysis - Functionality, UI / UX and Technical Analysis are all important aspects of the project.
  • Development - Development will be broken into small peices to allow many to contribute.
  • Localization - I plan to come up with localization files in English for this module early in the development process and try to seek help from people to localize these files into other languages.
  • Documentation - Help, FAQs, Tutorials, etc. - all important aspects of a project.
  • QA - Need help testing the module.  Beta testers, regression testers, the more testing the better.
  • Support - People willing to comit to monitoring support forums and/or providing additional support for modules during certain times.
  • Marketing - People charged with the task of using guerilla marketting techniques to spread the word about this module.  Selling this functionality of this module in competing spaces can help to sell people on DNN as a whole.
I view every DotNetNuke module as its own product.  I don't think the core modules should be any exception.  Every product should have its own team focusing on furthering development of all aspects of the product.   In order for this to work, we need volunteers, so please, volunteer.  No contribution is too little.

Thanks,
-josh

I would be interested.  I have worked on a news management system myself.  It is not as highly developed as yours, but it does some interesting things.

1.  Checks html for basic errors.

2.  Automatically creates headline w/ abstract  and a top story w/ longer abstract which may include a photo from almost any html you throw at it.  I have restarted rewriting the code, albeit in C#, but I am willing to work in VB.NET and I need to really dig into DNN since I began work with people using it.  I also have a management system for advertising to integrate with it.  The original is in VB.NET and the code is over year old.

If you would like to see a "very" rough sketch, you may go here:  http://www.netsolutionsxp.com.  I have had so very little time to work on it, but a good news management / publishing system is "for certain a passion of mine".  The site "is" in VB.NET, but I can code so much better these days and definitely need to do some rewriting before I send you that code.  I just started a new job, and I really need to get deep into DNN. I will need a month to become acclamated with my work, but I am certain becoming involved would be mutually benefical, and committing my spare time would improve my ability to contribute at work.

I have been looking for an opportunity like this.

Thank you,

jspurlin

I have also been working on a CategoryManager that allows you to categorize "anything" without having to rewrite scripts or code for things:  it works for links, news, photos, etc...  I need help with that, too.  It saves me "oodles" of time, even in a very imperfect state.
