Currently DNN 4.9 upgraded from 4.62 > 4.8 > 4.9.

In the begining I mistakenly set page state persistence from it's default of 'Page' to 'Memory' when it was still DNN 4.62.  I read at mitchelsellers.com that it is best to leave this setting at the deafult.   I am attempting to set it back to Page and having issues.  I change Page Persistence to Page and then restart the application in the Host Settings screen.  After this I get an error 500 when simply attempting to expand the performance section of the host settings.  Try to Log out, error 500.  Make a small change to the web.config and allow the application to restart.  Same error 500 issues.  Restarted the IIS services and recycled the App. Pool.  Below is a sample of an error.  The site will then run mostly OK to the users, however if anyone attempts to login, error 500.  Have flushed local cache, tried from a different client PC, and left the change over a weekend thinking all cache will clear, same issue.  Then the only way to get the site working correctly is to manually change the setting in HostSetting table > PageStatePersister back to 'M', then make a small change in the web.config and allow the application to restart.

How can I set this back to 'Page' successfully.  Thank You.

 Jeff,

To accomplish this you will need to modify the value in the Host Settings table manually, then after making the change trigger an application restart, by re-saving the web.config.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately this did not work.  FINALLY I did find the issue.  We had a module installed from Xpient Solutions, "Open View-state". This was causing the conflict.  Once this module was uninstalled, I was able to change the Page State Persistence back to it's default setting of Page.

Thanks for your help on this.
