I have exactly the same issue with two sites that I tried to upgrade.  Backed up my web.config, copied across all of the files in the DotNetNuke_05.00.00_Upgrade package, renamed release.config to web.config and modified the sql connection strings.  The upgrade appeared to go fine, the site loads fine.  There is nothing relevent in the eventlog, and the Version table shows the upgrade to 4.9.1 and then 5.0.0 (I was previously on 4.9.0).

Going to either the Login or Register pages gives me nothing, no login or registration controls.  I am using the default login and registration pages, and the default providors.

At this point I am going to roll back, because I can't afford to keep my website down.  If you have any questions about my case feel free to contact me.

Oh bloody brilliant.. it seems that there were files that did not get copied over... I can login... thank you...

now how do i make sure that the database upgraded all the way to 5... i may be still on some 4.9.X database because that's what errored in the installation...

(I love that the dashed lines between the modules in the editing are gone... it looks so much closer to the finished product than it did before.. as you are editing it.. everything is faster as well.... Yes Yes Yes i love it!)

For anyone who encounters this exact issue (no errors, the login and register controls just do not appear), here is what it turned out to be for me:  I was using a skin that defined "contentpane" instead of "ContentPane", and the newest versions of DNN are case sensitive.  I edited my skin files to name ContentPane properly and ran the 5.0 upgrade again, and it worked fine.
