I am behind my school's firewall trying to get DNN running. I am a relative newbie so there could be any number of things wrong, but since no one else appears to be having this problem, I have the feeling it has something to do with my connection.

After getting Visual Web Developer Express and the .NET framework and the SQL server installed, and downloading/unzipping DNN, I opened VWD, selected Create New Web Site, and selected DotNetNuke. Selected HTTP, typed 'http://localhost/dnn' (as per the instructions I was following from http://forums.asp.net/1114393/ShowPost.aspx), and got the following error message:

Unable to create the Web site 'http://localhost/dnn'. Could not find a Web server at 'localhost' on port 80. Please check to make sure that the Web server name is valid and your proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, your Web server may be temporarily out of service.

Does this mean that my school's firewall is blocking it? Is there any way around it from my end, or am I just shot out of the water?

it should not be an issue as you're navigating to a website on your local machine, but your school settings may be passing you through a proxy or gateway incorrectly. Open your control panel, and doubleclick the internet options icon.Select the connections tab, and then press the lan settings button at the bottom, and make sure the 'bypass proxy server for local address's" checkbox is checked.

You can also try it, using file as the type rather than http, in which case VWD will create a mini-webserver to run the site in. This server is only really intended for development, as if you close VWD it close's it, but it will allow you to work with DNN.

okay... I brought my computer home to see if it was the school's firewall, and I am getting the exact same problem, so I don't think it's the firewall...

I did the internet options thing that you said, only when I get to the LAN settings, nothing is checked or filled out on the whole menu. Nothing is filled out under 'proxy server', so obviously it won't let me check the bypass box.. I use this computer both at home and at school and have never had to use any special settings other than the ones I have now. What should I have for proxy settings? (Not the exact numbers, of course, but how I would go about finding them.)

thanks for your help!

Make sure that the VS Developers and VS Debuggers have Read, Write, Execute Permission on the root directory IIS is set to.  I am pretty that at a minimum hte VS Developers has to have these permissions so the IDE can create the directory.  Also, make sure you are a member of each of these groups.

Also, is your account and administrator on the box.  If not that could be the problem since administration rights are needed to adminstrate IIS sites using the IIS manager.  Since the IDE also creates the VD, I would be willing to bet you have to have adminstration permissions.

I don't really know what you're talking about in the first paragraph, none of it rings a bell for me.. I'll explain what I am running:

XP Pro, SP2, all the latest updates...
Visual Web Developer '05 Express
ASP.NET Framework (latest version, whatever that is - downloaded it four days ago)
SQL Server, whatever the free one is
DNN 4.0.2

This is all behind a router (both home and school, I bring the box home for the weekend every once in awhile)

I do not know what IIS is, but I only have free programs - I haven't paid a cent for anything so far. (I looked up IIS and it appeared to just be a component of Windows Server 03.)

My purpose is to make a DNN web site (hosted by 1&1 Internet) which I can construct, design and test on my computer and then upload to a remote server. I am not running a server off of my machine. I know that 1&1 has all the capabilities necessary to run DNN, I just need to figure out how to get it installed locally so I can figure out how to use it.

I appreciate all your help so far! (keep it coming ;)
