DNNStuff is proud to release another update to the popular Aggregator module. Aggregator is a flexible module that acts as a tabbed container for multiple modules or straight html text.

Version 5.5 has just been released and contains a number of enhancements and fixes including:

  • A version for the newly released DNN5 as well as DNN4, and legacy versions still available for DNN3
  • RSS - tabs can now be dynamically generated from RSS
    • each rss item in a feed will become a single tab with the rss article as the tab's content
    • you can limit the number of articles fetched as well as cache the feed for better performance
    • an RSS Template has been added so you can customize the look of the content as well as handle RSS enclosure
  • Fixed search indexing - indexed text will now open the correct tab, not just the last opened tab or first tab

A new quick start video has been added to show how easy it is to add tabs.

Version 5.5 is a free update for all Aggregator 5 customers!

Other news:

  • Module Rotator and Inject Anything have both been updated recently to DNN5 versions, DNN4 versions are also available
  • Previously all the demo modules only worked on localhost. This has been changed for Aggregator and Inject Anything as these demos will now work on any valid DNN install. Each demo now merely shows some reminders that these are demo copies
  • Feature request forums have been created to track feature requests for all modules. You must be logged in to post so we can converse back and forth about the requirement

Thank you for your time.

 Hi Richard

How does the latest version perform in SEO terms. I had stopped using my copies as content was not getting indexed but Aggregator is a useful tool and i do miss it.

Thanks

Ian

(Actually I would like to see all modules make some kind of SEO performance statement).

Hi Ian, thanks for the nudge to my email. Frustrating that the forums don't send out notifications properly still.

For tabs that are created and have text in them through the Edit/Add tab functionality, these are now properly indexed through the DNN search mechanism and the proper tab is selected when a user clicks a search results. For example, if you create 4 tabs, each with different text content and and the users searchs and finds something on tab 3, when they click the search result it will open on tab 3 for them. Previously it would show the first tab (if they hadn't visited the page before) or the last tab they had open during their session.

As for Google and other providers it's still a hit and miss affair. I've done some tests with Google with content that was in tabs 2 thru n and it seemed to show up for me in searches. There has been some discussion about whether Google indexes content in hidden divs or not and I've never got a clear answer about it. One thing you could possibly do as a work around would be to create another page, kind of like a site page that has links to the individual tabs. In this way, the search engines would hit this page and open each tab individually and index that content. I have a demo page that shows how to link directly to tabs with a url or client side javascript (url would be the best for this type of use).

Thanks for the question and if you have any ideas or enhancements for the module please don't hesitate to post in one of the Enhancement Request forums on the site. I'd say about 90% of the ideas for updates come from users of the module so if you need something added, please contribute your idea.

HI Richard

Thanks very much for providing this useful information.

Based on this I think I will buy / update existing copies and provide sidebar links as an SEO backup.
