Hi,

I am trying to install DNN to our windows reseller package wit Heart Internet.

I cannot install, just keep getting 500 error I have setup a Virtual Directory but still get 500 error.

I cannot view any pages due to this error and I think its due to not connecting to the database which is on another IP.

We have Win 2008 servers with MSSQL -

I have used the below connection details;

Could anyone help as Ive looked every where and search every item for few days now and cannot get this system working, Im more used to PHP and struggling to install this...please help me! :)

Your primary connection string appears to be correctly written. However, there is an error in the placement of the end comment tag in the legacy connection string. It should be:

<appSettings>

Are you able to connect to Sql Server using the same IP, username and password in a different client such as SQL Server Management Studio?

The Error 500 (Internal Server Error) is a catch-all one so could have many other causes. My guess is that it is not SQL server related. Are you able to check your server log (or more likely have our host check it for you) to obtain more information?

Hi thank you for the great fast response, I have just contacted my support for the server log so we can get more information.

I have also downloaded the SQL Server Management Studio but struggling to install it on XP Laptop. Is there any other program windows based I can just use to query the database? or am I getting it totally wrong?

I have changed the code to what you specified and still get 500 error, I'm really stuck with this now, cannot seem to get it working or even showing any aps pages or installation or anything!! :(

Ok, We are getting there, I have the 500 error cleared.

I have got to the install page fine but now I am getting this error -

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. I have just put the IP of the MS SQL like -
