I hope that subect made sense -

Here's my situation, I have a main portal (www.A.com) which has SSL on it.

I want to have child portals with their own domain (www.B.com) and allow them to have SSL on it as well when operating under www.B.com

The number of domains may vary, at the least continue to grow/add new ones, and they are not known before hand, so the multi-domain certs aren't a viable option.

Is there a way I could set this up?

Hey Baatezu,

My understanding is that you can buy a single wildcard cert that would allow you to secure any sub-domain at A.com (e.g. http://b.a.com, http://c.a.com). But that you cannot have one certificate for multiple top level domains. This isn't specific to DNN, .NET, Windows or anything - it's just "how it works" - I was looking around for a good web site that explains this with more detail but couldn't really come up with anything. Maybe someone else can provide us with a more in-depth explanation of why this is the case.

Take care,

Thanks for mentioning the wildcard cert - I did know about it, and that may be 1 of the optons I use (as well as dedicated server so I can create multiple sites for multiple top level domains). If I didn't know about it, it would be a life saver.

I was pretty sure that was how 'teh interwebs' worked, but sometimes you never know. :)

I did a little searching and there are certs out there for multiple domains on a single install - which I did know of (goDaddy has one) but they were small, 4 or 5 domains.

I found one for 25 domains at http://www.geotrust.com/ssl/multi-domain-ssl/, I don't know how many clients I'll have (the more the merrier) but I think this might work for a short term solution, and maybe I will just limit each DNN install to 24 clients (nobody gets 0, that's MINE!!!!).

P.S. I am in no way advocating or supporting using geotrust - That was just the first example of multiple domains on a single server above 5 that I found, so I posted the link to show something that is available.

EDIT - Oh... umm... godaddy does 100 domains on a cert... So... yea... apparently more than 5...

Actually, a Unified Communications Certificate should work for you just fine (presuming you can edit/add new domains).  We use services from Digicert, their UC product is outlined here (http://www.digicert.com/unified-communications-ssl-tls.htm).   This is exactly the case they were built for... managing multiple domains without having to manage multiple certificates.

Cheers
