I have no experience with Kentico so i can't say either a positive or negative thing with regards to DNN.  Responding purely as a 3rd party observer of the thread so far, though, two items stuck out:

  • few 3rd party components
That's right only if 200+ web parts won't cover your needs. +You can anytime easily add your own Webparts. +Open API.

So, DNN also has "OPen API" so that's a wash.  Easily add your own webparts is same as adding your own modules so that's also a wash.  That leaves the "200+ web parts" comment -- does that mean it comes with 200+ webparts by default or that there are over 200 webparts overall including 3rd party webparts?  If the latter, I must point out that DNN has had 9000+ add-ons just counting what's available on SnowCovered (that does not include many free third-party modules and skins).  Of course, there are also many, many poorly-developed third-party modules and many are outdated so don't count all 9000+ as being items you'd actually want or use...

  • it costs money - $1000/site (and that has no source code, no webfarm support,no staging and only 10 products for ecommerce site meaning the $1500/site version is required)

Right, fully supported complex CMS has this price.

Heh - this made me laugh.  If price is an indicator then, priced at $2000, DNN's new "Professional" version must be twice as good as Kentico....

Those points aside, I must say that I do like reading posts such as these pros and cons as I'd otherwise have little other exposure to certain subjects discussed in these forums (such as Kentico).  Thanks, Cathal, for your always-helpful comments and thanks also Kentico_petrpa for the counterpoints to Cathal's original repsonse.

I had worked with PHP Nuke back in the day, so when I got in to ASP.Net sites I thought I would give DNN a try.  I pitched it to a client and set up a demo and the main thing I noticed was that DNN was way slow. And is was a drag to skin.  I abandoned it and went with something else. With Kentico I built and deployed a full blown municipal site with all the bells and whistles in 90 days. That included the time to gather all the info and requirements and have me and my intern put in the initial data. We trained municipal employees to keep it updated and the only time I get called is when they want to add some new feature.
We have built sites with all sorts of intergrations; intranets, ZenDesk, Jquery slideshows, Mootools plugins - we haven't found anything we couldn't do. The main weakness in Kentico is the E-commerce module. We had to write our own code for shipping by weight to work. Our programmer was able to look at the API and have this done  and tested in a couple of days.
In my world results count, and for me the results have spoken for themselves. We use Kentico all the time and are able to rapidly deploy high performance websites that will adapt to anything I design like clockwork.
BTW - I have done three sites for non-profits using the free license, I think you will find it quite capable. You can see two of  them at http://smithvillemusicfestival.org and  http://lostpinesartisansalliance.org.
I do use other codebases when Kentico is overkill. We have used wordpress and ModX for a couple of clients and for real simple stuff I use Surreal CMS.
I would recommend Kentico - here is my blog where you will find a tutorial on porting an html template into Kentico - http://leswarren.blogspot.com/2009/12/my-kentico-design-workflow-update.html
