Bill,

I don't know if you are going to be backing up your hosted accounts or a local account so I'll show you both.

The best way to get a reliable backup of your DNN site is to zip up all your web files in your root, and take a native backup (.bak) of your MS SQL database.  To take a native MS SQL backup you just open up your database in MS SQL Server Management Studio, right click on the database and choose backup.  At that point you will have to select a few options such as where you want the backup to go.

If it's for a PowerDNN hosted account, these instructions allow you take take a full backup form your control panel

Wise man i highly recommending doing a backup

I just upgraded DNN to the new 5.0 release and it took down my site all day, thankfully my hosting company was able to restore the database and files.  I almost lost 10 months of work.

You can use SQL Server management express connect to the database and then just go to tasks , back up, sometimes on a hosting account you may need your hosting company to do it for you as your account may not have the permissions.

Big lesson I learned today, i knew i should have backed the site up but I had upgraded DNN many times with no issues and i did not expect any problems,  i felt like an idot because it was stupid not to have a back up.  Never again will i be caught like that.

backing up and restoring is a straight forward process get a hold of SqlServer Management Express its a free tool lets you connect your local SQL SERVER database or a remote server database.  all you need is your login details and server details.
