Been told to use DotNetNuke by client, I only know how to build simple web sites in Dreamweaver. From what I can gather I need to know how to use .net and ASP pages and have that software installed to use the DotNetNuke system.

Is that correct?

Thx

Kevin

Kevin,

you need a windows web server (IIS, which comes with XP pro, Vista premium or Windows Server) and .Net Framework 2.0 or later installed (most Windows machines will already have).

You also need a Microsoft SQL server, e.g. free MS SQL Express.

Once DotNetNuke has been set up on a server (per requirements stated by Sebastian), you don't have to know how to code ASP.Net pages.

Once running to create the site you put modules (think along the lines of widgets) on pages. These modules have different uses.  One just displays 'static' text another provides an interactive calendar and so on.  if you look at snowcovered.com or the DNN marketplace you will see that there is a huge range of 3rd party modules, of differing quality.  In problably 90%+ cases you won't need to create a custom module, and if you do there are a lot of developers that can help.

With the actual design DNN uses a skinning engine, which is some ways is like Dreamweaver templates on steroids.  In the downloads section of this site, DL the documents zip file and read the skinning document thats part of that DL.  You can create a skin using HTML which DNN can use.

There are plenty of people who you can team with on your DNN project. Also these forums can be helpful in providing answers.

If you want feel free to contact me (info AT webpc DOT biz).
