I would love to have a module that could display the "most popular" and/or "most emailed" pages in a tabbed list on the homepage. You see these all the time on newspaper websites, but I can't find any module like this. Have I overlooked something? Any suggestions? There's an example here: nytimes.com. Doing this manually would be tough, as we have a small staff, but our newspaper site has dozens of pages a week.

Hi David,

What module are you using for the articles of your newspaper.  I am using Ventrian News Articles for a magazine (www.thousandislandslife.com).  All articles are handled by Ventrian News Articles.  There is a token called [VIEWCOUNT] which would show the view numbers.  There is a satellite module called News Articles Latest and it can be added to any page and you can use it to display articles with different filters including Most Viewed.

If you are not using Ventrian News Articles, there should be a similar way to achieve this.  If your articles are all DNN pages (tabs), perhaps you could use the DNN Reports module on a page.  You would need to make a SQL statement that would pull a list of the most popular DNN tabs.  Then you would make a template to display the results of the SQL statement in a pretty format with links to the appropriate pages (no coding involved).

For the second option here to work, I assume you will need to have Site Logs turned on.  Log into your site as HOST.  Go to HOST>HOST SETTINGS.  Scroll down and expand the OTHER SETTINGS node.  Turn on Site Log settings to Database and set your History.  Now that this is set, you should be able to go under ADMIN>SITE LOG and get some stats.  Page Popularity will show you what you want to see.  If you can dig into the code to find the stored procedure that makes this report, you can use it to get the report you want.

If you are not using a module for your articles, I strongly recommend Ventrian News Articles.  It will do just about everything you see on that NY Times site.

Mike

Your request got me thinking too so I enabled this feature on our magazine site.  I am not sure if the rest of the crew wants this, but you can have a look:

Mike: I was looking at your site and noticed the links at the bottom of the page, the links by categories. If I choose a link, that section that display anymore in subsequent pages. Is this by choice or a limitation in the News module?

Hi Salama,

On the home page of that site I am using a Satellite module from News Articles called "News Articles Latest".  Actually, I am using 2 instances of it, one to show the 2-collumn headline and one to show the rest of the headlines.  I then added the Weather module and at the bottom I added 3 instances of another Satellite module called "News Article Archive"  I set one to display categories, one to display authors and one to display months.  When you click on any of those links it takes you to the page where the actual News Articles module is installed.  They wanted the article pages to look cleaner so I left the Archive links off of that page, but I could add them easily.

The team is now debating if we should keep the popular articles function that I just added and I think it is getting shelved.

Mike
