I am new to DNN, managed to create a child portal without any problems but I don't seem to be able to create a Parent Portal. I am using DNN version 5, Vista and .Net version 3.5 / Sql server 2008 express.

What I would have expected to do, was create a virtual directory in IIS7 with say Alias MyNewSite then logged in as host, gone to portals then done 'Add New Portal' filled the details in, setting alias to MyNewSite. I would then expected DotNetNuke to have copied the relevant files into that virtual directory, but that just doesn't happen. So what am I doing wrong?

parent portals use different url's from the current URL, so they need to be added as host headers in IIS - see http://www.visualwin.com/host-header/ for how to do this (note: child portals use additional folders so don't require host headers)

IIS5 is not your problem as far as the host headers are concerned it is your OS. You can only have multiple host headers in a server OS not in a desktop OS.

Vista with IIS5 will only give you one website. The easiest server OS i have found is Server 2003. It came right up and started working out of the box.
