I have installed various versions of DNN dozens of times, and I had never seen this behavior until now....

Installing either DNN 4.0.4 or DNN 3.2.2 on a Windows 2003 server, I get a "Root element is missing." error. This is because the web.config file has been wiped out! The file is there, but all of its content is gone. I replace the file with a fresh copy of release.config straight from the install download, modify the connection string, browse to the site -- and it does it again.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Any ideas where to start?

check your permissions, perhaps you've granted the ability to delete the file, but not modify it.

Finally got this working a few days ago. Turns out the only problem seems to have been a specific character in the password for my database connection string. I had an ampersand (&) in there, which I have done a number of times in the past. As soon as I removed the ampersand from the password so it was just purely alphanumeric, everything worked fine.
