When our publishers and other users login to create new pages and administrate the website it probably will confuse them when the website changes its design to something completely else. Therefore we would like to integrate the admin and host area in our website by giving them the same skin. While we can simply apply the skin to that pages too, it still is not neatly and seamless integrated, sometimes the admin area is too big (width), sometimes parts of our skin.html are re-arranged on admin-pages, all the big icons and images do not fit, some pop-up divs from the admin pages (like when moving the mouse over that little down arrow) are misplaced etc.

A good first step would be to create an "admin" version of your skin that exapnds horizontally with the content (assuming your skin is fixed-width).  If your starter skin already uses up all of the page width for your targeted screen resolution then you're stuck with having to scroll when certain modules require too much space.  If that's the case I'd recommend creating an admin skin that drops all side columns except the main content area and, if you have a sidebar menu, consider dropping that too if it takes too much space (instead provide a "back" button near the top of the page that links to your homepage).  If you're out of space (width) then it comes down to deciding what's more important to an admin:  keeping the original skin layout or having admin modules you can use without scrolling.

Beyond that, you'll need to treat odd Admin module renderings as "bugs" with your skin.  If modules in the admin area render improperly with your skin then you have to expect that some modules on the public part of your site may suffer as well.  Any changes/improvements/workarounds you make to the Admin version of your skin should be considered for inclusion in the non-admin skin version.

Hope that helps-

Hi mamlin,

thank you for your answer. I already thought about an admin-version of the skin, too, which uses the full width and drops the sidebar. Surprisingly, some of the admin pages do this already while others stay in the content area - do you know how this can happen?

Furthermore, I particualry covered the following issues:

  • Hovering the little down-arrow left to a module title (both in admin and normal skin) which opens the little menu, will show the menu but a misplaced 100-200px down.
  • The form which shows the pages in a multirow list in the actual DNN skin is displayed with many rows, while now it only shows one row.
