I recently tried to upgrade the DNN version of this site and it failed. (My first upgrade)

I followed everything I read about updating and changed the release.config (both sql provider lines, machine key validation key) and I got a sqlDataProvider error on the install (see below) I was going from 4.3.3 to 4.9.1

Any thoughts or help?

please post the content of /providers/dataproviders/dqldataprovider/04.04.00.log . are you encountering issues when using the portal now?
