I am getting the following error (as a JavaScript when trying to add a child portal:

Sys.Webforms.PageRequestManagerTimeoutException: The server request timed out.

Originally we tried adding the portal from a template we had created from an existing child portal, but I have just received that error after trying to add a child portal using the DotNetNuke default template.  After receiving the error, I can see a new row in the Portals table with the name, description and GUID columns populated, but all other columns are null or 0.  Also, the process does not create a directory for the new portal in the web root.

We are using DNN 4.9.0 with .NET framework 2.0.50727.1433 and the SqlDataProvider.

Any ideas?

it looks like a database timeout, showing up as an ajax timeout as that page has partial rendering switched on. I'd recommend you check the eventviewer to see if you can get any further details - also if this is quite large, it's a good idea to clear it down as it can often be a bottleneck when logging a multistage process such as portal templates. Finally, 4.9.2 fixed a few template errors, so it would be wise to upgrade to that version as well.

Had a similar problem here, when creating a portal it would spin for awhile and then give the timeout message.  I checked and the portal wasn't created, so I clicked "Create Portal" again (since the form was still filled out), the portal was immediately created, but there was no HTTP alias, so I'd go in and manually add that and it would work from then on.

Upgrading from 4.9.1 to 4.9.2 fixed it!

I just upgraded to 4.9.2 and I'm still having the same problem even using the Default Website template.  It tried your suggestion of re-clicking the Create Portal link, but it causes the same timeout error.

I cleared out the event viewer before trying to add the new child portal, and there are no errors in the event viewer after I try to create the portal.  Is there any other place I can look for some clues as to why I can't create a simple child portal?

A little more info that may help...

I went through the source package and read through PortalController.CreatePortal() so I could try to figure out where the problem might be.  It looks like it's getting through adding the Portal table record and adding the profile definitions, but no admin user is created.  There is no error, though...it just hangs until the server responds with the JavaScript prompt timeout error.
