DotNetNuke Community Edition 5.0.1 was officially released this afternoon.  While this represents the latest 5.x release we still recommend that people use the 4.9.2 release for production use since it is the more mature and stable platform.  You can find more infomation about the release on the official blog announcement.

I am a little concerened about the new direction of Pro and Community editions.  The main issue is the future of the Community version.  After a very nasty time with Community Server, where they started out as a free open source project which then progressed into a commercail product with a free version which morphed into primarily commercial only system of the years.  is there any promises made that this same path will not be take with DNN?  That is there the community version will stay open to free use in commercial sites and that the professional version will not turn into the primary version and the community version the scraps?

yes. remember, the 'Corp' is a relatively small part (in numbers) of the overall DotNetNuke development team. Even if they decide to focus entirely on the professional version ( which they absolutely will not, this is just hypothetical worst-case scenario ) you will still have a substantial core team working on the Community edition. The existing license guarantees you have nothing to worry about.

One significant difference between DotNetNuke and Community Server is that community server was never an "Open Source" project.  It was always released under a commercial license which allowed people to use it for free and even offered source code.  That is quite a bit different from being a real Open Source project.  We use an OSI approved license and are fully committed to keeping DotNetNuke Open Source.

As I have said in other threads, you can look at all of the members of our board of directors and all of the new management hires, and in every case you will see people with a long history and commitment to Open Source.  Larry Augustin, one of the founders of the Open Source movement, would not be on our Board of Directors if our plan was to move away from this model.
