Rob, the upgrade error you're getting is common, however it has nothing to do with upgrading. Confirm that your host has set the right permissions for a DNN install. Sometimes they set right permissions on the root folder (eg httpdocs) but forgot to do so for the folders under it.

Don't worry you will make your way out of these errors soon, God willing.

also make sure your connection string is right in web.config

Why do you have to download the file?  I'm just wondering why it wasn't included with the install zip.  Not trying to cast blame, trying to honestly learn :)

I'm just glad other people are having issues with the template file.

If not then do so after downloading it from:

Hope it works out for you, don't worry I got alot of errors in the beginning too but once you get it right DNN is pretty cool!
