Bat 21 - the forum module is available - but if you do a search on the issues people have with the forums, then I suggest you use the free ones from http://www.activemodules.com - honestly - you can't compare the two. The gallery module is the same in DotNetNuke.

I've got YAF running on another site - it's pretty good actually for what you get for nothing.  There's also http://www.presstopia.com - which I had running on http://www.catalooksupport.com - which was a slick little module but I think I outrgrew it's functionality so installed the Free version of the http://www.activemodules.com instead.

The problem I see here, in general, is the time it takes for the base dnn installs to get fixed, in fact we strip out and remove everything except the base dnn install, and then look around and add in the very cheap or free third party solutions which are provided by many community members here.

What you'll find is they tend to support their products better than what you'll get here due to the nature of this project.

The down side of this is - if you install a third party - (eg. someone else's) module - you run the risk they could do a runner and never be seen again but you're stuck with this produc that can never be upgraded again, which is why someone like http://www.activemodules.com is a good solution since he's well into the 'key module developers' environment.

But the down side of using any of the extra dnn modules that are part of the project is they take forever, if ever to get updated - the gallery module - years, literally years before anything has been done and released to the public.

The forums module - a huge job, but years to get right - and it's still got complaints from people here who say it's never fixed or supported.. so there are pros and cons on each side.

I think there is nothing wrong with supporting the good 'base model' dotnetnuke version and then go find some really good solutions that might be free or cost you not much more than the price of a cd and get the benefits of what organised and commercial dnn solutions can bring you.

I've tried in vain to use just dnn modules and found I spent more time reading on the forums why something wouldn't work, and found that once I switched to some of the cool 'third party' solutions, it just worked and I was able to carry on with the work, rather than getting stuck wondering if it was me.. or was there something wrong.

That's my take on it.... so enjoy your journey Bat 21.

Nina, your freekin awesome!  Exactly what I was worrying about, you address every single thing.  You have me feeling a bit more than simple now, but I don't mind.  APPRECIATE you taking the time... AWESOME!

Got space on discountnet (the name certainly does not mean they are cheap) to test everything and learn IIS7/Windows 2008/3.5/silverlight and do a small family project (family forums and pages). figured we can do all our testing there, then I can just keep for the family if we don't move over to them.  The price had me out shopping for other windows servers.  Just found out our server (lunarpages) offers windows servers now, and with their packages, DNN comes installed if you wish (at a glance, for free).  I'm thinking about staying with them and once we get everything running bug free, transferring everything right over to Lunarpages Windows servers.  If they offer their packages with DNN installed for free, we'll only have to worry about finding the right modules, and you've given me a great start.

I seen some mods that they offer them installed for what seemed to be a nominal price, my god this will make my life easy.

ANYONE have experience with Lunarpages Windows Servers?  Especially with the DNN installed?

Hey Oliver, ole buddy!  Lost track of you.  I'm trying the link to your photo gallery, but am getting page load errors.  Doesn't seem to be up.  Let us know when it's available again.  I'd love to check out your photo gallery module.

I'm glad I got back on track then :)

I'm not sure which link is giving you problems, but you should be able to find the bits on my website. I'll be posting the next release into CodePlex, maybe that will be tonights project. If you want, maybe email me via the Contact Me section on my website with the exact link / error message you are getting?

Anyways, the Photo Gallery module is built for DNN5 and pulls images from Flickr/Picasa accounts at the moment and displays them with various jQuery plugins. This is great for the majority of my clients. They want killer photo editing tools (picasa installed locally), but they also want to be able to easily keep some photos refreshed on their website. Plus, I don't have to pay to host the images (everybody wins).

Currently it uses the new ajax ControlMethods Jon Henning added into the WebControls package (hence the DNN5 requirement)

Well thanks for the compliment Bat 21 - and what's cool is that you now feel armed and .. dangerous.. - so it looks like DNN has another convert - which is always good to hear.

Discount ASP I have heard is good. You're going to find lots of people have different opinions on their hosters, fortunately for me, I host a couple of hundred sites now, but NOT the type that normal hosters offer, it's more managed hosting where we create the sites for clients and install only the modules we believe are worth putting on.

What you'll find is the biggest gripe that I"ve noticed about hosting is their 'medium trust' setup - eg.. they have security restrictions that cripple dnn - and make uploading modules that require more security settings than they offer.

Memory - some hosters like to squeeeeeze a few too many sites on the servers, giving users time outs, frequent appliction pool restarting or slow as a wet week.  Often people blame dnn incorrectly but a well setup server that is configured to run dnn will ensure you won't run out of memory.

Some hosters provide their own control panels and flavours of dnn which may be slightly different to what you download and I think, but I can't be 100% sure - the one click install on godaddy doesn't give you host access and you can't install modules and skins.. but you can if you do your installation.

I did read something about LunarPages but I can't remember if it was good or bad - you could search these forums I guess, or search on google for reviews about dnn hosting.  If they offer an install for you - then it seems they must have some experience behind them.

All I can suggest and i don't think this will affect you - Don't host with anyone who has not hosted dnn before - don't be the guinea pig.. or you'll end up the being the roasted pig on a spit.. because these hosters who are experienced with dnn hosting have ironed out the issues that may occur and your site is most likely going to be online more than offline.  If you've got a LunarPages account - try them and and share your experience here.

Be prepared to experiment - having a site to 'test' things is always better - especially when you are new and learning.

You sound so excited and happy and it made me smile - and it was really nice what you said and I appreciate it.
