I want to create a pair of user profile properties where picking the value in the first field (a drop down list) limits the choices in the second field (another drop down list). In other words just like the Country and Region profile properties.

I have tried setting up 2 lists in the Host>Lists page, with one list being a child of the other, and then setting up a profile property based on each list, but it doesn't work. The two profile fields remain completely independant. There isn't any post-back to indicate changing the value of one field is causing any kind of recomputation of the other field.

Does anyone know if this is possible and how it is done, or are the Country and Region profile properties a hard-coded special case?

Thanks.

A little research later ...

The Country and Region profile properties are not "hard-coded special cases". They just have their own special datatype (Country and Region respectively). My custom profile properties however have to use the List datatype.

Anyhow, the question remains - is it possible somehow to create related List-based profile properties.

AFAIK there is no option, but Charles should know, I will ask him later...

Have you had a chance to speak to Charles about this. If he confirms it does not work like this at present I will write up a feature request in Gemini.
