When I first ran DNN on my localhost, my smtp settings worked.  When I uploaded it, they dont work.  I checked to make sure my setting are correct.  Can someone please help?

make sure, the SMTP server is accessible from the web server and the SMTP server credentials are entered correctly (use Test SMTP option in Host Settings). Next make sure to use an account, which is allowed to send emails to mailboxes in other domains (relay option).

I am using gmail.  I have checked allmy settings.  When you say (relay option) what do you mean?  Is it a setting in DNN or Gmail?

I am not sure, if gmail can be used to substitute an own smtp server and allows to relay messages from your web server (sender's domain and/or receipient's domain don't match with account domain).

I'm using gmail on my site without any issues, I found the info on the forums but I also created a section in the wiki with the various settings you need to enable. If you find anything that's not correct please signup for an account and update the article!

Also, Google is smart and sets the Reply-To headers to the from address provided to the SendNotification / Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail functions in DNN. So, the emails should be delivered through spam filters and sent from your google account. When you reply to the email received, it will automatically be addressed to the person who sent the email (not the address used to deliver it to you).
