Did you give the right security permissions on your dnn directory (user ASP.NET needs full permissions)?
In web.config, double-check the SiteSqlServer key : make sure you have the right user-name/pwd, server and db.

This is Windows 2003 serwer, working as domain controller, theres are no ASP.NET account

In documentation I find info about networking_service account - and this acount has all privileges ... but problem still exist ;(

Kashish -

Same problem here - I've been struggling with this for 2 days now.
  • Windows 2003 EE, also a domain controller
  • IIS6
  • DNN version 4.03, fresh installation
  • MSSQL 2000 database (different server)
  • SiteSqlServer connection string correct
  • Install proceeds without error
  • NETWORK SERVICE account has permissions, ASP.NET account does not exist.
When trying to load the portal I too get:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

kinda the same here... upgrading a site

my workstation is Windows 2003 - not a DC,

IIS6
DNN 4.02
MSSQL 2005 same server
connection strings are correct,
NETWORK SERVICE has permissions.

I get the

Nothing To Install At This Time

Current Assembly Version: 04.00.02

Current Database Version: 04.00.02

rather than my real home page.  I am expecting some errors as i haven't put into place my custom modules from my DNN3 installation, but I think i should get past this first.

I think i have this now

i had to add

<add key="InstallationDate" value="4/5/2005" />

from my original web.config.   I had copied all the other settings but not this key.  The Upgrade documentation should probably be updated to include this...
