Hi,

I've currently got DNN Verison 04.05.00 on my website and think it's probably a pretty good idea to upgrade it. However, I know absolutely nothing about DNN and pretty much nothing about web design and nothing at all about MS SQL. Thus, I'm wondering what I should do. I've found the spot to download the upgrade version but I'm not sure what to do with that -- would I just want to replace the files on my web server with the files from the DotNetNuke_04.09.01_Upgrade.zip or is there more to it than that?

Also, if this ends up screwing something up, can I "undo" this operation simply by replacing a backup copy of the website that I downloaded from the ISP and overwriting these new files?

Like I said, I'm a complete hack. I'm sorry for the simple and probably stupid question, but I figured this would be the best place to ask. Better now than after I've totally screwed something up.

Thanks,
Evan

when upgrading from DNN 4.5.0, you need to adopt web.config file manually. you might follow this upgrade procedure.

You will find some really good upgrade procedures at Mitchel Sellers' Blog (mitchelsellers.com).

I'm not sure what is the recommended approach, but my personal recommendation is that upgrade to 04.06.02.  That will require manually merging data from your old web.config to the upgrade version.  Mitchel's instructions should get you through that.

Upgrading from 04.06.02 to 04.09.02 (the recommended most recent version) will be much easier.

And, the most important instruction is that you make good backups of your database AND your web directory before you start.  Do it, too, at the end.
