Is it safe to use 5.0.1 for real production sites, as the latest stabilization release is 4.9.2?
Are there big differences between 4.9.2 and 5.0.1? I mean, can we easily port additional third party modules from 4.9.2 to 5.0.1, or are there some major changes in core?

You know what.. you won't get a solid practical answer. You get wishy washy answers. If I were you, I do my own homework.
1- Scan the forums and see what people are complaining about and see if you experience the same issues. NEVER assume because someone reported an error that you will get it too. See if you get it too.
2- Go to Gemini (DNN's bug tracking site) and scan the bug reports and look for the serious ones. The ones that are show stoppers or the ones that the will keep you from doing your specific tasks and then decide.
3- Install it and try it out as a typical user in your company. Install all the modules and skins you will be using and go HIT IT and see what happens. If you find an issue, report it in the forums. You might get a helpful workaround or someone who will tell you you're doing it the wrong way.
4- You will get replies like "Yes it works just fine with me" OR "No it sucks and it's buggy". So what are you going to do? Just kick the tires yourself and do your homework. I am a skeptical person and I depend on my own intuition and personal experience.
5- I have used 5.0.1 and I haven't seen many issues. BUT DO NOT TAKE my word for it. Do your homework! Your OS, hardware and supporting software can affect DNN.
6- Make a judgement call and determine what happens if something didn't work quite as you expected. Are you going to lose your job or is it just a nuisance?
Good luck!
