OK. After several failures and some odd behaviors, it appears I need some help. I have tried to install  DNN on Godaddy several times with absolutley no success and finally gave up.

By the way, GoDaddy should now be nicknamed SlowDaddy.

I have recently aquired server space with the DotNetNuke site's suggested provider ... webHost4Life.  Damn, it is sooo much faster than Godaddy - 20 times at least!

The 4.9.0 installation works great. However whenever I try to upgrade to 4.9.2, it fails. I am interested in purchasing the "Business Server" module and they suggest upgrading first.  Here is how I went about the upgrade:

  1. I uploaded the zip file "DotNetNuke_Community_04.09.02_Upgrade.zip" to my root dir.
  2. I extracted the files, choosing overwrite all files
  3. pointed my browser to dnn directory... web.config has autoupgrade to true. I also tied autoupgrade to false and pointed browser to dnn/install/install.aspx?mode=install... should I be using mode=upgrade?

Either way, I get errors.  The most curious one is that the upgrade seems to remove file off the server. Specifically, in the directory dnn/App_Code, the HTML, IFrame, Survey, and XML folders are missing.  There is still a reference to these folders in web.config,  <add directoryname = "HTML" />

Is this normal. Do I need to merge the web.config file manually?  Or do anything to the web.config file at all?

Please, any assistance will be appreciated.

Hi

Not sure about the App_Code thing...
Can you please state the error messages, if it asks you to consult a log file we need those logs as well.

Many thanks...

Alex.

Thank so much for responding.

As I am sure we all experience, sometimes we get so wrapped up into what we are doing,( tunnel vision), that we overlook the basic process of elimination.  I have figured out the issue and wish to share it with you all. Although it was not the most obvious solution, I should have at least check this out.

As an FYI, the error I was receiving was "Subdirectory Add - Folders not found... HTML, IFRAME," These keys were added in my web.config, but were not on the sever.

For those of you using WebHost4Life services, please note that the FileManager's unzip and overwrite files option, which allows you to upload a zip file and extract it utilizing the server, does not work recursively. When I extracted my upgrade file and chose 'overwrite existing files', FileManager noticed that there was already a folder named "App_Code" and overwrote the whole thing, removing whatever was in that folder, even though there were files and/or folders inside that were not being replaced. This was continued with every folder that matched an existing folder.

Since the upgrade install package does NOT contain replacements for every file/folder in the original install, I was missing many files.

Perhaps I should have known this? Who knows?  I am so used to Windows File Manager and/or CuteFTP, and , well, any other file manager I have ever used,  that I nenver thought about it.

I used CuteFTP to upload the upgrade package instead and it worked perfectly. I am looking forward to diving into DotNetNuke. It looks awesome.

Thanks again.

it does not remove them -it appears not to create them - if you are going fromV3 to V4 then taking the path 3.3.7 to v4.9.2 does not create the application sub directories for html, survey etc -

pre install web,config has

<!-- register your app_code subfolders to generate granular assemblies during compilation
      <codeSubDirectories>
         <add directoryName="sub-directory name"/>
      </codeSubDirectories>

post install it has

<!-- register your app_code subfolders to generate granular assemblies during compilation
      <codeSubDirectories>
         <add directoryName="sub-directory name"/>
      </codeSubDirectories>
      -->
      <codeSubDirectories>
        <add directoryName="HTML" />
      </codeSubDirectories>

but there is no sub directory in the app_code folder called HTML

The install thus bombs out -

 Check your permissions on the root directory.

It sounds like you might have a few issues going on here.

First and foremost, if you have the survey module installed on the existing working 4.9.x site, you WILL have an entry for it in the <codeSubDirectories> node of your web.config file, there is no other way for that module to be functional without it.

Secondly, I would look at possibly not using the "unzip" functionality provided by webhost4life and uploading the files manually to the proper location for the upgrade via FTP.  Yes it is more time consuming, but you will at least know what is going on with files/folders etc.
