Hi all,

We've recently launched our DNN site, http://ctnation.citizenschools.net. As a support for our sequential iterations of the site, we've administered a user survey to about 60 users.

The feedback we've gotten is largely positive, although there is an area that has been highlighted across numerous responses as really needing help. That area is the login and registration. There are two things that might help:

(1) The login doesn't seem to remember users - despite having set (on the server) the web.config token to not timeout for 60 days. Any suggestions for improving this feature?

(2) The Captcha is super-hard to read, which means that multiple tries are often necessary to register accounts. I've encountered issues with this while demoing the system, which made for a poor introductory demo, as well. A better captcha implementation, like re-Captcha, would help A LOT.

Anything else that we could do to streamline the registration -> login process? Thoughts, tweaks, ideas that have worked for you and your users?

Thanks!

Hi Dave,

I would recommend moving to a third-party solution for your login and registration needs.  There are a couple major players out there, though their names escape me at the moment.  This will allow you the flexibility you need to fine-tailor the registration and login process for your particular audience.

Cathal has a blog post that details some of the subtleties of the "remember me" checkbox.  I suggest giving it a read to see if it points you in the right direction.

I've explored the CAPTCHA system used in DotNetNuke a little bit, and I do not recall it being easily substitutable for an alternative system.  A third-party solution, however, might yield this capability.

Hope this helps!

Brandon

Hi, Dave-
I'd suggest you check into the Dynamic Registration module from Data Springs.  It will open up a ton of options for you in terms of modifying your user registration process.  It also includes an "Advanced CAPTCHA" option to use a different solution than the default DNN CAPTCHA.  The "Advanced CAPTCHA" version includes a "refresh" feature (to ask for a new image if the current is not legible), a "say it" option to play audio of CAPTCHA for the visually impaired, etc.

Here's a screenshot of the "Advanced CAPTCHA":

In addition to the CAPTCHA features, the Dynamic Registration module makes the user signup process completely open for customization so you can streamline it, incorporate questionaires, create custom email notifications, attach files to emails, etc.  You can even configure multiple registration forms for the same portal (parent could use one form, students use another, teachers another, etc).

All in all a very nice module.

Cheers!

Thanks for that Mamlin, that's one of the modules that I had in mind when I wrote the response.  And while I have little direct experience with it, I have heard a lot of good things about that module.
