Hi, everyone.  I've been using DNN for over a year now.  I'm a little slow on upgrades, so the site still uses 4.9.  However, we now have an error which is occurring for all users on several different browsers.

The top menu is missing.  The home page will load, and because there are a couple of links to other pages, clicking on those links will get me to those pages.  The search function can pull up links that get me to other pages.  I can log in as admin or host.  In no case does the top menu appear or function.

Because of this, I cannot access any admin or host pages except those in the DNN area at the top of the page.  I can't see Pages in particular, which means I can't view events and see if some error has brought my website down.

I've had to take the site offline.  Any suggestions about what I should look for or what I should do next?  I haven't yet reloaded my backups, partly because I'm not sure what could have caused this in the first place.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Ken

Finally...found someone experience the same problem as me! I loaded 4.9.2 and everything seemed to go smoothly. IIS is setup, the database looks good, permissions look good...however, when I login (admin or host, it doesn't matter which one) there are no admin or host menu options. There is actually no menu whatsoever. Just the menu bar with a search area.

This is what I see when I'm logged in as Admin (or host):

What is going on??

After several attempts at uninstalling and reinstalling, I finally assumed the problem may have been my source of instuctions for installing. I did another uninstall, followed these directions http://www.dnncreative.com/tabid/289/Default.aspx?PageContentID=122 and it worked.

Hi, Ray.  It is nice to see I have a partner in suffering.

I'm not really suspicious of an installation problem here, although it could be.  DNN has been running on our site since Feb. of 2008.  The latest update was in February of 2009, and there really hasn't been any obvious trouble since then until now.  The menu loss was sudden, and it would almost suggest a file or setting has been changed somehow.

I did manage (through a back-door with our server provider) to get into the database and look around, especially to check out the EventLog table.  By no means am I an expert at reading the thing, but I didn't see any untoward events outside the typical problem GoogleBot has when it's indexed a link on our Events page that no longer exists--and that has happened every couple days since last April.  I've also tried accessing the site from other computers.  Same problem, so it's not some Javascript glitch on my 'puter.  Same problem exists in IE7 and Firefox.

Any knowledgeable people with ideas?

If anybody is interested--I did find a fix to the problem, but it is not a happy one.  The site has apparently been subject to an attack.

The evidence:

  1. Every javascript file in the /js folder (and at least one in the Events module) was replaced by a file bearing the same name.  I could tell the replacement because the upload date was months after the latest upgrade.  Because none of the scripts actually worked, the menu didn't work either.
  2. Likewise, the default.aspx file had been replaced and included an extra javascript line that looks an awful lot like an encoded uploader.

I'm getting in touch with our host, but I don't have a lot of hope.  Security seems to be pretty lax.

Ken
