Hello.

I'm tyrying to understand some of the terminology used in the DNN documentation.  I'm sure a lot of it is common in the web computing field, but i would like to know how these terms relate to a specific web site like Microsoft.com or DotNetNuke.com.  I figure that would clear up what these terms mean.

DNN installation - Is this one web site like Microsoft.com?

Portal - Are portals contained in an installation?

Host - According to the DNN Admin Guide, the host is responsible for the whole installation

Administrator - According to the DNN Admin Guide, the administrator is responsible for just a single portal

I'm confused because when i login to my DNN demo as the assigned portal administrator, i can only see the Home and Admin menus and it is assigned to the Registered Users, Subscribers and Administrators roles.  Yet if i sign in as the Host administrator(SuperUser default setup in DNN), it shows the Home, Admin and Host menu options.  For both logins, it only shows the users portal admin and any other regular users.  It does not show the host admin in the user list.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

One of the key features of DotNetNuks is Multi Portal support, which allows to install the software once (installations) and have many web sites (www.mydomain.com, www.yourdomain.com but also www.mydomain.com/team) running on it as independent portals with individual content and (nearly) individual membership.

When you download DNN and install it on IIS, this would be an Installation.  An Installation by default has one portal.  A portal is a website.  A single installation can host many portals.

Portal - Are portals contained in an installation?
A Portal is a website.  As mentioned above, a single installation of DNN can host many portals all using the same database. (very cool)

Host - According to the DNN Admin Guide, the host is responsible for the whole installation
Host refers to a Super-User account that has full Admin access to all portals and all Host-level settings.  When you log into any DNN portal with a Host account, you will see an Admin menu and a Host menu.  As a general rule you would never give a portal administrator Host access. As a host you can install Extensions such as modules that are accessible to all portals.  Administrators cannot install Module but can install Skins if a Host allows it.

Administrator - According to the DNN Admin Guide, the administrator is responsible for just a single portal
This is correct, an Admistrator is a regular user that has been added to the Administrators Role.  When logged in as an Admin, you will see an Admin menu but not a Host menu.  As an Admin, you have full access to nearly every tool necessary to build an awesome website.

The Host menu has a User manager where you can manage Host accounts.  You do not have to assign Host level users to any Roles as they have full access to everything in all portals.  The Admin menu and control panel has a link to User Accounts.  User Accounts is accessible by Administrators and here you can create your users logins and assign them to Roles.  You can also create Roles and Role Groups (very cool)

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Hello Sebastian.

After reading the manual over and over again.  I think i understand now that an installation can contain many web sites(portals) and a portal is maintained by a portal administrator while the installation is maintained by the host administrator.

I have to read some things many times and test them before they make sense to me.

Thanks for your help.
Tony
