Greetings,

I have just installed DotNetNuke and compiled and have run it for the first time. I had a couple of initial questions that I was hoping someone who knows this software could answer.

1. I've developed a number of ASP.NET websites, but I have no idea what a portal is in the context of DotNetNuke. It took a while to set one up the first time I ran the site--what did it do?

2. Ultimately, I'm trying to determine if DotNetNuke is the right tool for a site I want to develop. This site needs A) The ability to allow users to submit articles, B) the ability for the admin to approve articles before they are published, and C) the ability to associate binary downloads with each article. Can someone give me some idea how much customization would be required for this? Unfortunately, I use C# and do not really want to start using VB in order to get the features I need.

Thanks for any tips!

ad 1. a portal is a web site

ad 2. use appropriate modules:  bundled Repository or UserDefinedTable or 3rd party module like e.g. DMX from www.bring2mind.net

I appreciate the reply but did I mention I am completely new to DotNetNuke?

Where do I go to find out which module does which of the tasks I need to accomplish? Are "bundled Repository," "UserDefintedTable" and "DMX" the module names?

Thanks.

If you use the Install package you can remove one layer of confusion.  Just install, and browse to your installation's default portal (web site).

Download the Quick Start Guide.

Look at the Getting Started page here under Support.

Run out and purchase a book about DotNetNuke.

As for programming, it's best to see what you can do with the modules that come with DotNetNuke, the fairly large library of free modules that you'll find by Googling about, and the commercial module ecosystem exemplified by the DotNetNuke Marketplace and Snowcovered.com.

Write a custom module should, IMHO, be the very last option on the list of things to do when creating a DotNetNuke website.  Spend your time, instead, learning about DotNetNuke skins so that your sites look good, have appeal, and can't be identified at first blush as typical DotNetNuke sites.

Oh, and if it comes to writing custom code, you can use c# or any other language supported by .NET.

I appreciate the more details response. However, I must admit that I was hoping I could get a general idea of how appropriate DotNetNuke was for the task I need to accomplish before reading pages and pages online and buying and reading a book.

The one link I did check out was the bring2mind.net domain mentioned in the first reply. I ended up sending them a short email with a couple of questions, which promptly came back as undeliverable.

I'm not sure what is meant by "browse to your installation's default portal (web site)." I did compile and run the site in Visual Studio, if that's what you mean.

I don't have any problem reading many pages of docs, or even buying books. But I'm extremely busy and it would be an enormous waste if it was only to find out DotNetNuke was not appropriate for what I need to do.

Has anyone here created a DotNetNuke site that included binary downloads associated with each article? Is this something that is easy to do, or hard?

Thanks!
