 What will you do if Google closes Picasa tomorrow? If you are using an external service, you are depending on its decisions and the more external services you combine the more likely there will be a situation that one fails, is changed or removed.

That's right.

And that's why, every module that we are building must be, if not completely, but very close to generic.

The logic should be solid, so if the service fails someday, we could easily update our solution.
