To Create a skin with the front page totally different layout from most pages plus another layout for articles....seems to indicate three skins or is there another way to have three or more layouts within a site?

Three skins is most likely what you're looking for.  But if only the pane locations/relationshiops change you could put every possible pane in the skin and not use those you don't want on the particular page.  The empty ones will collapse.
