I am sorry to disapoint you but it doesn't working.

Maybe I can help: I just had the same problem. The reason why my favicon.ico (which I placed in the portals root) wasn't shown is, because it doesn't had all the NTFS rigths the user needed to view it. Try to check that.

In some browser you must add it to your bookmarks before it will show up.  Maybe that's all you have to do.

OK, sorry to resurrect this annoying beastie, but I uploaded both a favicon.ico and DotNetNuke.ico file as soon as I created the portal, 5 days ago. Same folder as web.config. Using IE7 and I still get the default icon. Deleted all temp files - no joy.

Can anyone else shed some light?

Anyone??? My client won't let me launch with the site like this. Once I deleted temp files, for a time I got back the standard "e" for IE and "page" for Firefox. Now even after bookmarking in both, I'm back to the dnn default.

I've even deleted the favicon.ico and DotNetNuke.ico files. So when I view http://www.stjohnrochester.us/favicon.ico it first shows the 32x32 DNN default (even though the file does not exist), but when I refresh the browser it says page cannot be found. However, in all cases the smaller faviocn image is in the address bar and on the tab.

It's a browser problem. So long as the file is present in the portal folder and your permissions are all correct, it will generally show up for new visitors to the website. What you will however have trouble with is forcing IE to accept or change the icon once it has already had a different one.

I've put favicons in all my portals and found this to be the case. Some show, some don't, but after a couple of weeks they're all showing. Tell your client that it will work for their site visitors. It will eventually swap over for your own computer as well.

I also find that Firefox isn't nearly as fussy as IE and will update it quickly.
